About Joseph

Hailed by Opera News for his “high notes with a ringing, clarion tone,” American tenor Joseph Tancredi is originally from Bayville, New York. He is a current member of the International Opernstudio at Staatsoper Stuttgart. His recent and upcoming roles include Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Vierter Jude (Salome), Cassio (Otello), Das ewige Kind (Fundbüro) and Borsa (Rigoletto).

Joseph made his European debut in Stuttgart during his first year in the Opernstudio, jumping in for an ill colleague as Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore). He has since been seen in Stuttgart as Fenton (Falstaff), Erster Geharnischter (Die Zauberflöte), Jakob Schmidt/Tobby Higgins (Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny) and Das ewige Kind in Staatsoper Stuttgart’s JOiN Production of Fundbüro. 

In concert, Joseph has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra as Harry (La fanciulla del West), as the Tenor Soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with Voices of Ascension, as the Tenor Soloist in Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang with Charlotte Symphony and as the Tenor Soloist in Händel’s Messiah with Tucson Symphony. He also made an exciting debut with Opera Philadelphia, jumping in as the Tenor Soloist in Orff’s Carmina Burana

Joseph has also garnered ample recognition in the competition circuit. He sang on the Metropolitan Opera stage as a National Semifinalist in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in 2023. He was a Vocal Institute Concert Series Award Recipient of the Gerda Lissner Foundation, and holds an Encouragement Award in Memory of Alfred Hubay from the George and Nora London Foundation and the David DiChiera Encouragement Award from the Premiere Opera Foundation + NYIOP

Joseph spent the summer of 2023 as a Renée Fleming Artist at the Aspen Music Festival, where he covered the title role in Francesca Zambello’s production of Mozart’s Idomeneo. He also had the opportunity to perform as the Tenor in Terrence McNally’s play Master Class, alongside award-winning actress Phylicia Rashad as Maria Callas. While at Aspen, Joseph was also heard in opera scenes as Rodolfo (La bohème), Nadir (Les pêcheurs de perles) and Chevalier de la Force (Dialogues des Carmélites). Joseph spent the prior summer in 2022 as a Studio Artist with Opera Maine, where he performed in the studio production as Roderick Usher (The Fall of the House of Usher) and covered Steuermann (Der fliegende Holländer) in their main stage production. 

Joseph spent the summers of 2019 and 2021 as an Apprentice Singer at Santa Fe Opera, where he sang the Peasant (Eugene Onegin) and covered major roles in two world premieres, Jon Harker (The Lord of Cries) and Benjamin (The Thirteenth Child). While at Santa Fe Opera, he also performed substantial excerpts in the Apprentice Scenes Showcase as Percy (Anna Bolena) and Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi).  During the summer of 2018, Joseph participated in the Chautauqua Voice Institute where he performed his first operatic role as Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), followed by Detlef (The Student Prince).

Joseph holds a Master of Music degree and a Professional Studies Certificate from the Curtis Institute of Music. During his studies in Philadelphia, he was seen as Lurcanio (Ariodante), Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Albert (Albert Herring) and Conte Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia). Joseph had the privilege to perform with Curtis on Tour alongside director of Vocal Studies, bass-baritone Eric Owens, as well as vocalists from the Curtis Opera Theatre on a program featuring Brahms’ Neue Liebeslieder waltzes. He also had the opportunity to sing the Prison Scene & Final Trio (Faust) as the title role, under the baton of Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra. Joseph also holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music, where he was seen as Albert (Albert Herring) and Raimondo (I due timidi).

In his free time, Joseph is an avid reality & scripted television connoisseur (specialized in the Bravo franchise), and enjoys spending his time finding new vintage/second hand shops and locations with the best fountain Coca-Cola Zero. He cherishes any time he gets to spend with his family and friends.
